The River Clyst is a small river in East Devon, rising between the villages of Payhembury and Plymtree at a place called Clyst William, and flowing out into the Exe estuary by Topsham. The word “Clyst” is thought to be the Celtic word for a clear stream.
Along its course the river passes through or beside a number of villages, most of which have “Clyst” in their name:
- Clyst Hydon
- Clyst St Lawrence
- Westwood
- The Ashclyst forest
- Broadclyst
- Clyst Honiton
- Clyst St Mary
- Clyst St George
